Carnival vs Royal Caribbean: Which Is Better for First-Time Cruisers?

The two biggest cruise lines feel very different once you're onboard. An honest comparison on price, ships, food, and vibe — so you pick the right first cruise.

If you're choosing your first cruise, you've probably narrowed it to the two giants: Carnival and Royal Caribbean. They look similar from the ads. Onboard, they're different vacations. Here's my honest take as someone who prices both every week.

Price: Carnival usually wins

Carnival is often one of the most affordable mainstream cruise lines, and it commonly prices lower than comparable Royal Caribbean sailings. The exact gap depends on ship, date, cabin type, itinerary, and promotions.

Ships and wow-factor: Royal Caribbean wins

Royal Caribbean builds the biggest, most amenity-packed ships in the world — surf simulators, skydiving tunnels, ice rinks, water parks, entire neighborhoods onboard. Carnival's newer ships (Mardi Gras, Celebration, Jubilee) are impressive and closing the gap, but Royal's top tier is in a league of its own.

Vibe: pick your party

  • Carnival leans lively and casual — the "Fun Ships." Great for groups, families who don't take themselves too seriously, and anyone who wants a good time without fuss.
  • Royal Caribbean feels a notch more polished and activity-driven — days packed with things to do, big-production entertainment at night.

Neither is "better" — they're different moods. Tell me which paragraph sounded more fun and you've got your answer.

Food

Both lines have solid main dining rooms and excellent casual options. Carnival's Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina have a cult following; Royal's Windjammer buffet and complimentary spots like El Loco Fresh on some ships are strong. Specialty dining costs extra on both. Call it a tie — you won't go hungry on either.

For families with kids

Both are excellent. Royal Caribbean's mega-ships have more bells and whistles for teens; Carnival's kids' clubs (Camp Ocean) are well-run and the price is friendlier for families booking multiple cabins. If you're bringing kids and watching the budget, Carnival usually stretches further.

My honest recommendation

First cruise on a budget? Carnival. You'll have a blast and keep real money in your pocket.
Special occasion or bucket-list trip? Royal Caribbean's newer ships — the ship itself is half the vacation.

And here's what actually matters more than the line: the specific ship and sailing. A great deal on the right ship beats brand loyalty every time. That's why I publish verified deals every Monday instead of telling you which line to love.
