Nothing confuses first-time cruisers like the daily gratuity charge. Is it mandatory? Who gets it? Can you remove it? Let's clear it up — because at ~$16–$20 per person per day, it's a few hundred dollars you should understand.
What the daily gratuity is
Most mainstream cruise lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Princess, Celebrity) add an automatic daily service charge to your onboard account — roughly $16–$20 per person, per day depending on the line and cabin type (suites pay a higher rate). On a 7-day cruise for two, that's $224–$280.
Who actually gets the money
It's pooled and distributed among the crew you interact with and many you don't: your cabin steward, dining room team, and behind-the-scenes staff like laundry and galley crew. This is a meaningful part of crew compensation — cruise ship workers depend on it.
What it does NOT cover
- Drinks — bars add their own 18–20% gratuity to every order, on top of the daily charge
- Spa and salon services — typically add 18–20%
- Specialty dining — often includes its own service charge
- Exceptional personal service — if your steward goes above and beyond, extra cash in an envelope is customary and appreciated
Can you remove or adjust it?
Technically, most lines let you adjust or remove the auto-gratuity at guest services. Honestly? Don't — unless the service was genuinely poor. The crew works extremely hard for modest base pay, and the gratuity pool is how the system works. Budget for it like a tax: it's part of the real price.
Prepay or pay onboard?
Most lines let you prepay gratuities when you book. I recommend it: it locks in the current rate (rates creep up over time), and your onboard bill at the end of the cruise is that much smaller. One less surprise on disembarkation morning.
